Faculty Secondary Appointment
Dr. Christina L. Wichman joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in September 2009. After receiving her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center in 2003, she completed her residency in adult psychiatry, as well as fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Currently, Dr. Wichman it is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Psychiatry and oversees all educational endeavors within the Department. Additionally, Dr. Wichman is the Co-Director of Women’s Mental Health and Medical Director of the Periscope Project. Dr. Wichman has a subspecialty area of expertise in women’s mental health, specifically within the area of psychopharmacology during pregnancy and lactation.
Dr. Wichman has performed clinical research in the area of women’s mental health. She is regularly invited to lecture, regionally and nationally, particularly on the topics of psychopharmacology in the perinatal period. She has been a Visiting Professor at Oxford University, where she provided clinical instruction and systematic consultation in the area of collaborative care between psychiatry and obstetrics.
Dr. Wichman is the Medical Director of the Periscope Project, Wisconsin’s free statewide perinatal psychiatric access program. She has been in this role since the program’s inception and is dedicated to educating and supporting health care providers and professionals in caring for perinatal patients with mental health or substance use disorders.
Dr. Wichman is also a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry; she also served as on the governing council for this national organization for six years. She is regularly named an Outstanding Medical Student Teacher for the Department of Psychiatry and has received the John Gudman Golden Apple teaching award for resident and fellow education within the Department of Psychiatry. She has been recognized by Best Doctors in America, as well as Milwaukee Magazine’s Best Doctors in Milwaukee.
