Assistant Professor

Introduction

Dr. Ushma J Patel Joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the Division of Urogynecology. She graduated summa cum laude from Marquette University, then received her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in 2018. Dr. Patel completed her Obstetrics & Gynecology residency at the University of Wisconsin, where she stayed on to complete her fellowship in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery in 2025. Dr. Patel joined the Medical College of Wisconsin in October 2025. During residency and fellowship, Dr. Patel was active in research, education, and quality improvement.

Dr. Patel’s clinical practice includes evaluation and management of pelvic floor conditions such as: pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder (urinary urgency/frequency), fecal incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, fistulae, urethral diverticulum, pelvic floor tension, and hymenal abnormalities. To treat these conditions, Dr. Patel offers options from conservative management (e.g. medications and referral to physical therapy) to office based procedures, and more complex surgeries in the operating room. Dr. Patel offers all minimally invasive approaches (vaginal, laparoscopic, or robotic surgery).

Dr. Patel is a strong advocate for patient-centered medicine and prioritizes patient education and shared decision making. Additionally, Dr. Patel has research interests in urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence. Her research to update the prevalence of urinary incontinence has been recognized at a national level, and she continues her work in fecal incontinence through a $6000 education donation from Axena Health, Inc. This donation funds her randomized trial studying the impact of duration of use of a pelvic health device on fecal incontinence. Currently, Dr. Patel serves as a member on the American Urogynecologic Society’s Pelvic Floor Disorders Week Program Planning Committee.

Outside of work, Dr. Patel spends time with her husband, family, and friends. She loves Wisconsin and enjoying the outdoors!
