GynOnc Fellowship Experience & Rotation Schedules

The primary goal of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin is to provide fellows with advanced training and experience in the areas of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gynecologic malignancies as well as experience and training in compassionate end of life care.

Research

During the research year of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship, the fellow will have 12 months of dedicated research time. The fellow will have many opportunities to pursue basic science/translational research under the direction of Gynecologic Oncology faculty. There will be limited clinical responsibilities during this time to allow the fellow to focus on completion of their research project – the basis of their Thesis, which will be ultimately submitted for publication.

Clinicals

Clinical GynOnc (Inpatient/Outpatient) – 20 months
During the Gynecologic Oncology rotation, fellows will see both outpatients and inpatients in conjunction with the Gynecologic Oncology faculty and gynecology oncology team. The outpatient portion of the rotation will include initial consultations, surveillance visits, chemotherapy visits, postoperative care, simple office procedures and management decisions including plans for surgery. Fellows are responsible for interviewing the patient, performing the physical exam, and procedures such as colposcopy, endometrial biopsies, and intrauterine device placement. All patient visits conclude with a case discussion and joint decision-making. As their fellowship progresses, they are given independence in supervised procedures and patient counseling. The inpatient portion of the rotation provides operative, consultation and inpatient care of patients under the supervision of gynecologic oncology faculty. The fellows will also provide surgical and medical inpatient consultations; they may assist with obstetrics consultations and benign gynecologic surgeries and/ or intraoperative complications.
Critical Care – 1 month
The fellow on the Critical Care Rotation, located in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Froedtert Hospital, will be expected to understand and participate in basic and complicated critical care of patients in the SICU. They will work with the Surgical Critical Care attendings and fellows to build a foundation of skills in understanding and participating in assessment, decision-making, and the development of management plans with appropriate supervision.
Radiation Oncology – 1 month
The fellow on the Radiation Oncology rotation, located in the Cancer Center, will participate in the care of outpatient and inpatient radiation oncology planning and delivery of treatment for gynecologic oncology patients. They will participate in team education and research opportunities while on this service.
Colorectal Surgery – 1 month
The fellow on the Colorectal Surgery Rotation will participate in the outpatient and inpatient care of patients in need of colorectal surgery and procedures. They will be a member of this surgery team and participate in complex surgery, rounding and call responsibilities during this rotation.
Palliative Medicine – 1 month
The fellow on the Palliative Medicine Rotation, located in the Cancer Center, will participate in the outpatient and inpatient care of individuals under the care of the Palliative Medicine service. They will learn about the management of complex symptoms and how best to support patients in this specialized population.

On-site Educational Conferences

Protected time is given every Wednesday morning for didactics. These include the weekly GynOnc Fellow Lecture series, and the bi-monthly GynOnc Journal Club.
