Translational Research – It Takes Two to Tango!

Currently, translational research remains the focus for the majority of academic researchers at United States institutions. The emphasis on translational research is directly the result of the shift in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the premier US biomedical agency priorities. Therefore, the need to carry out translational research effectively is great. This opinion piece written by a basic scientist and clinician scientist outlines the current challenges in performing translational research in academic medical centers across the U.S., and offers solutions, which are not comprehensive in nature but intend to serve as a starting point for dialogue.
