Dr. Garrett Fitzgerald one of the Study Authors of Utility of Prenatal Doppler Ultrasound to Predict Neonatal Impaired Cerebral Autoregulation

Garrett Fitzgerald, MD, Assistant Professor in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, is one of the study authors of a paper in the February 6 issue of journal Nature that determines if abnormal prenatal doppler ultrasound indices are predictive of postnatal impaired cerebral autoregulation.

They found that extremely premature babies found to have abnormal blood flow parameters on ultrasound prior to birth are more likely to have blood pressure regulation problems (especially in the brain) in the first week of life. This is a critically important time for blood pressure control in extremely premature babies because of their risk for bleeding into the brain (intracranial hemorrhage). This represents a new application of ultrasound information obtained during pregnancy to better inform the neonatology team caring for critically fragile premature newborns.
