Child Thriving A Year After Miracle Surgery

Peterson-WISN12-first-surgery-dec2015242x150A young boy is thriving after a first-of-its-kind surgery. Miles was born prematurely with Spina Bifida, a birth defect that can cause paralysis. He and his mom were operated on while she was still pregnant in a corrective surgery that was first of its kind in Wisconsin.

“Our goal here is not normal newborn, because that’s not what they’re going to get. This is about improving outcome,” says Dr. Erika Peterson, Associate Professor of our Maternal-Fetal Medicine division and Fetal Concerns Center of Wisconsin Co-Director.
